Elizabeth Lyons: On the Other Side From You

Let’s take a look back at a beautiful exhibition combining the art of photography with painting.

Although On the Other Side From You concluded on Saturday, the 2nd of May, the resonance of Elizabeth Lyons’ recent exhibition persists, echoing in the minds of those who experienced it. Opening on Thursday, 24th April, with a lively private view featuring music from DJ Keith Marley and a flurry of excited visitors eager to peek at the work and take home prints. The exhibition extended beyond the visual, cultivating an atmosphere of contemplation that invited viewers to pause, consider, and engage with the subtleties that so often elude daily perception.

Through a considered interplay of painting, photography, and print, Lyons assembled a body of work that is at once intimate in its detail and expansive in its reach. Each composition distils ephemeral moments that might otherwise dissolve into the fabric of the everyday. The exhibition radiated a quiet softness, not in its effect, but in its manner, subtle, nuanced, and profoundly attuned to the human condition.

At its heart, On the Other Side From You investigates the spaces that exist between individuals and the intangible threads that bind us. Lyons’ nuanced engagement with reflection, both literal and metaphorical, invites viewers to locate themselves within the work and physically within the gallery through a mirror, promoting internal reflections that reverberate beyond the gallery's confines.

Originally from Manchester and now based on the Wirral, Lyons brings sensitivity to her multidisciplinary practice. With an MA in Fine Art from Manchester School of Art, her work moves across media while consistently exploring impermanence and connection. In this exhibition, each medium felt intentional, photography capturing stillness, painting offering depth.

For those who experienced the exhibition, its presence persists not only as a visual memory but as an enduring atmosphere that inhabits the mind long after departure. The presentation of Elizabeth Lyons’ work signified a pivotal moment for Hamilton Vault Studios. Her inclusion in our inaugural group exhibition, Our Gaze, in 2023 marked the beginning of a meaningful dialogue between the artist and the gallery. Now, with the debut of her first solo exhibition, we arrive at a moment of continuity and reflection. This journey stands as a testament to our ongoing commitment to fostering opportunities for local artists and nurturing lasting creative relationships.
